Neuro-Ophthalmology

Contributing to the Velocity Neurocentre (VNC), Neuro-ophthalmology is a subspecialty of both Neurology and Ophthalmology which requires specialized training in treatment of disorders for the eye, brain, nerves and muscles.

Our team of Neuro-ophthalmologists will be working closely with a team of Neurologist, Neuroradiologist, Neurosurgeon and Neuro-rehabilitation.  SMCV Neurocentre offers Neuro-ophthalmology clinic (Adult and Paediatrics), Visual Rehabilitation Clinic and Cerebral Visual Impairment Clinic.

We deal with neurological conditions related to the eye such as

  • Optic neuritis (of any demyelinating or infective causes)
  • Optic Neuropathies (due to drug toxicity, congenital causes, Leber’s Heriditary, Optic Neuropathy, compressive)
  • Cavernous Sinus Fistula and Arterio Venous Malformations
  • Optic Neuropathies secondary vascular causes (diabetics, hypertension)
  • Unexplained causes of optic disc swelling (pseudopapilledema, pseudo Foster Kennedy syndrome)
  • Ocular Myasthenia Gravis (muscular disorder)
  • Cranial Nerve Palsies (various etiologies, ischaemic and non ischaemic)
  • Bleharospasms and Hemifacial spasms. (CP angle tumors, idiopathic)
  • Unexplained vision loss (Congenital retinal dystrophies and optic neuropathies)
  • Benign Intracranial Hypertension
  • Traumatic Brain Injury Visual Rehabilitation

VNC also deals with Visual Rehabilitation taking care of patients with stroke and traumatic brain injury. Patients with these conditions most times are unable to see either on their right or left side. This rehabilitation technique enables patients to improve their quality of live tremendously.

In the Paediatric age group, we have a dedicated Cerebral Visual Impairment Unit (CVI) which treats children who have cerebral palsy or other forms of global developmental delay. This requires a dedicated team of neuro-optometrist and a neuro-ophthalmologist who council the parents and the child on the suitable treatment and therapy.  A well-developed questionnaire and treatment therapy is essential for the management of these children with the help of their parents.
