Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

Plastic reconstructive surgery is a surgical specialty involving the restoration, reconstruction, or alteration of the human body. The common procedures include craniofacial surgery, breast oncoplastic, maxillofacial, microsurgery, cleft lip & palate repair and burn surgery.

The aim is to restore function and appearance to the human body after illness or accident. Sometimes, emergency plastic surgery also supports the work of other surgeons, dealing with complex wounds from accidents or after other surgical procedures.  

Free flaps of skin, muscle, bone, fat, or a combination may be removed from the body, moved to another site on the body and reconnected to a blood supply for coverage of a defect when no local tissue is available.

Due to the application of plastic surgery, Plastic surgeons work closely with a wide range of teams from other specialities. Much reconstructive work is required following major operations and it is the refinement of plastic surgical techniques that have made some other areas of surgery possible.
