Emergency Medicine concerns the diagnosis, management and prevention of acute and urgent aspects of illnesses or injuries affecting patients of all age groups that requires immediate medical attention.

Emergency Physicians have the responsibility to initiate resuscitation, stabilization, investigations and interventions to diagnose and treat acute phase conditions. They assess and treat a wide range of illnesses, and potentially life threatening conditions. Examples include heart attacks, strokes, fractures, asthma attacks, injuries resulting from car accident, pregnancy related emergencies and overdoses.

Sub-specializations of emergency medicine include Palliative Care, Disaster Medicine, Medical Toxicology, Ultrasonography, Critical Care Medicine, Wilderness Medicine, Paediatric Emergency Medicine, Sports Medicine and many more.
