Anaesthesiology

Anaesthesiology is the medical speciality concerned with the use of drugs or other agents that blocks or temporarily takes away the body’s sensation (including the feeling of pain). It is a pharmacologically induced and reversible state of amnesia, analgesia, loss of responsiveness, loss of skeletal muscle reflexes, decreased stress response, or all of these simultaneously. Anaesthesiology is the continuity of patient care involving preoperative evaluation, intraoperative and postoperative care. There are many sub-specialties covered within anaesthesiology including cardiothoracic anaesthesiology, critical care, obstetrical and paediatric anaesthesiology, neuroanaesthesia and pain management.
