Neurosurgery

Neurosurgery is a surgical specialty that addresses conditions affecting the central and peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system in humans comprises the brain, its exiting cranial nerves and spinal cord, whereas the spinal nerves arising from the cord and traveling out from there represent the peripheral nervous system.  Additionally, Neurosurgery also addresses issues concerning the skull and spine, and dealing with them surgically.

Here at Velocity Neurocentre (VNC) our Neurosurgeon sees patients who are afflicted by a wide range of neurosurgical conditions such as Neurotrauma (head and spine injuries),

  • Neuro-oncological diseases i.e. brain and spine tumors, neurovascular disorders (brain haemorrhages or bleeding strokes, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations)
  • Degenerative diseases affecting the spine and discs
  • Neuro-infections
  • Paediatric neurological conditions
  • Haemorrhagic strokes
  • Aneurysms
  • AVM surgeries
  • Neurotrauma

Where appropriate these patients are also seen together with the rest of the VNC team of specialists, thus ensuring a well-rounded approach towards the management of these conditions.

At the VNC, the neurosurgeon employs open surgical techniques called craniotomies (sing. craniotomy for cranial approaches), open and minimally invasive spinal procedures and neuroendoscopes to treat those conditions described above. To perform them, the neurosurgeon here uses a highly powered microscope and microinstruments at his disposal to perform various procedures ranging from tumor excisions (cranial and spinal) to adult and Paediatric conditions requiring CSF shunting procedures.

Furthermore, he also employs Neuro-endoscopes for certain conditions that are deemed appropriate for their use.  Spinal degenerative diseases requiring intradiscal procedures or surgery, as well as carpal tunnel syndromes are also seen by the neurosurgeon. Pain related issues arising from spinal degenerative conditions and facial pains are also seen and suitably treated using radiofrequency techniques by the neurosurgeon here.
